They are metal cup hooks, what could go wrong? I've used several of them and have not had any issues of any kind. I recommend making a tiny pilot hole and then twist them in by hand. Forcing them into an unpiloted hole usually ends up in a crooked hole and a raised bump which interferes with the cup hooks fitting flush up to the collar.

The cup hooks I received are not brass. They may be brass plated, but the core is steel, and they do rust. I am extremely disappointed. If something is advertised as "brass", then it should be just that. The price was very reasonable, so I should have been immediately suspicious. I can't return them, as I've already installed them to support decorative light strings around my house. I've been an Amazon customer for a very long time, and I'm usually quite satisfied, but in this case, Caveat Emptor. Bad product description, Amazon.
Update: In response to my complaint, the seller has offered to refund my purchase price. I'm still out the half-day-plus I spent installing the now-rusting hooks, but I appreciate the gesture and applaud their willingness to try to make it right. The product still gets a one-star, because they just ain't brass! (I'm hopeful that the product description will be changed to make it more accurate). Amazon's complaint system worked for me!
